After several years of denied access, I was finally permitted in early 2025 to photograph large slabs of semi-precious stone—materials typically withheld by competitive stone traders due to their commercial value. While access required persistence, the extraction of these resources demands a far more complex orchestration of labour, energy, capital, and desire. These ancient formations created over thousands to millions of years are cut, shipped, commodified, installed, and eventually discarded within the cycles of the built environment. Their transformation speaks to a disconnection between contemporary cycles of consumption and their recording of deep time. Each image in this series is constructed from approximately 60 high-resolution photographs, tiled together and presented at a 1:1 scale. These images are both archives and an homage, imperfect mirrors of these surfaces which contain the history of the world.
