Modern Societies, 2021 (Excerpt)
Single-channel digital video, color, sound, 7 min. 26 sec.
Installation: Texas State Galleries, San Marcos, TX, 2021. Photo: Anthony Cross → Inquire

Accompanied by Burial's track "Nightmarket" (2016), Modern Societies features photographs arranged into an atmospheric landscape as a play on the genre of still life or nature morte. The landscape was constructed using salt dough, an early material used for modeling, symbolizing the industrialization of the staff of life. The arrangement was inspired by bodegón, a 17th-century Spanish style of painting that combined everyday objects with elements of nature. The work aims to emphasize the act of observation, reminding viewers that our perception of the environment is influenced by a history of images that have shaped our understanding of nature and its domestication.
